Travelling to the Maldives, was my Everest, concerning destinations. Over the last 18 or so years, I had always tried to look for a justifiable angle to cough up the obscene amount of money required. Fast-forward a few years, and three children later, visiting a Maldivian island felt even further from reach than ever before.
That all changed one day, I was looking at an atlas looking at locations we should visit during our open-ended journey around Asia. I saw The Maldives and after a few google searches like “Maldives on a budget” I discovered that the previously inaccessible ‘inhabited islands’ were now open for business. I realised very quickly that you can now experience the Maldives on a shoestring. I knew our budget and found an inn that would suit. It was a fantastic sounding deal of $25 each per day all inclusive. Amazing! So, was it cheap and as great as it sounded? Yes, the answer is a resounding yes!
We went in April 2017 to an inhabited island, and it was a brilliant 2-weeks! We had the best time and met beautiful Maldivian people. We went snorkelling, we saw many dolphins, we went fishing, we ate so much tuna, and it was a great trip. To compare, we went to the other end of the spectrum, one of the most exclusive resorts in the Maldives.
My advice? The best holiday would be mixing it up!! We love the Maldives so much we are returning in 2018!
